Art for dark walls
Dark walls make art glow, if the art gives the eye some light. Here is what works on teal, navy, charcoal and black, with real pieces made for three dark rooms.

Pale blue
A black frame recedes into a dark wall so the art floats; gold or natural wood adds warmth. The 20 × 28 in white mount gives the art room to breathe.
Give the eye some light
On a dark wall, a print with a pale or warm ground stands out without effort: cream paper, ochre, rust, a glowing rectangle of colour. A dark print on a dark wall disappears unless the room is very well lit.
Frames and mounts
A black frame sinks into a dark wall, so the art seems to float. Gold or natural wood brings warmth and picks up brass or timber in the room. The white mount on the larger size is a strong frame of light around the art.
A real example
We measured the wall from the photo, then made eight pieces from the room's colours. These are the ones the curator chose, with its reason under each.

Questions
What art looks good on a dark wall?
Pieces with a pale or warm ground, such as cream, ochre or rust, so the art reads as light against the wall.
What frame suits a navy or dark teal wall?
Black to let the art float, or gold and natural wood for warmth. A white mount adds a band of light around the art.
